Blessed Are The Meek

October 23, 2016 Speaker: Craig Malcolm Series: Psalms

Topic: Psalms Passage: Psalm 37:1–37:11

Progressive revelation is a doctrine that is introduced in an earlier portion of the Bible and developed as it unfolds more fully in later sections. However, it sometimes works the other way. An Old Testament passage sometimes expounds a New Testament verse more fully. Psalm 37 is a case in point. The eleventh verse in this psalm has to do with meekness and is quoted by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5:5). It is one of the beatitudes. That teaching is not explained by Jesus but that is what Psalm 37 is all about. Here we can understand Jesus’ usage in detail.

• A quiet spirit
   1. “Trust in the Lord” (v.3)
   2. “Delight…in the Lord” (v.4)
   3. “Commit your ways to the Lord” (v.5)
   4. “Be still before the Lord” (v.7)
   5. “Refrain from anger” (v.8)
• Understand the future
• Meekness
• The wicked will fall
   1. “The wicked plot against the righteous, but the Lord laughs at them” (vv.12-13)
   2. “The wicked draw their own weapons against the righteous, but they will fall by their own weapons” (vv.14-15)
   3. “The wealth and power of the wicked will be taken away, but God will sustain the righteous”(vv. 16-17)
   4. “The righteous will survive days of deprivation, but the wicked will perish” (vv. 18-20)
